The animals are colored black and white stripes with white underbelly. Each individual stripe pattern is different and the skin of the animal is also black. These are herd animals and they have large territories where they feed; they will eat bark, leaves, buds, fruits and roots.

Adults live in groups; there are usually about several females, a male and the young in the group. There are also so called bachelor herds where surplus males live.
