These wild canids were once abundant on the vast territories and now their population is greatly reduced due to habitat reduction and human predation. They are protected by conservation laws in some US states, yet in some remote areas especially those where prey is abundant, their numbers are stable.

To determine the population size, track registration, live capturing, and radio appliance collars are used. Special reintroduction programs work to preserve the species.
