In the winter, the animals eat the buds and twigs of woody plants. The creatures are ruminants and the stomach of the animal has four chambers for digesting food. In the first two chambers, the rumen and the reticulum, food is mixed with bile to form the cud. A whitetail deer hunter cannot kill deer babies when hunting.
