There are about 500 white tigers kept in zoos nowadays. There are probably no such animals in the wild. Some specialists think their captive breeding unnecessary. The Tiger Species Survival Program objects to breeding white tigers because their ancestry is often uncertain, which makes their health unpredictable. Years of inbreeding have influenced their condition greatly, so these animals cannot produce healthy offspring. They are absolutely unable to live in the wild, because several generations of white tigers have been living in captivity. Animals with such a coat color are poorly adapted to living in the wild; hunting is very difficult for them.
