This breed originated from crossbreeding Southdown rams and Norfolk Horned ewes. The breed was registered in 1810 and considered to be a great improvement over the both breeds the parents belong to. The weight of the rams varies from 250 to 350 pounds.

Ewes are much smaller than males and weigh from 180 to 250 pounds. This breed is famous for its wool; the fiber is 25-33 microns in diameter and 2-3 inches in length. Mature animals give from 5 to 8 pounds of fleece. Suffolk sheep breeders will provide pictures of the pets.
