Squirrel Feeders
Squirrel feeders, like many other wildlife care items, are readily available on the market. There are lots of various feeder types so you can pick out one you think will be the best for your garden. It is not, however, the feeder type that squirrels care about, but the type and quality of food you put in your feeder. One reason why people buy feeders to attract squirrels is that they are very fascinating to watch. This can also be an excellent wildlife demonstration for students and beginning naturalists. By installing squirrel feeders you help squirrels get through winter months when food is less available, and competition between animals gets really gruesome.
Squirrel feeders are constructed in such a way as to facilitate feeding for squirrels and prevent invasion by birds. Many feeders feature hinged lids and door-like structures insurmountable to birds, but they do not posing a great difficulty to enterprising squirrels. Feeders can also be equipped with transparent food receptacles and windows; squirrels have little or no doubt as to what's inside of them. These feeders have a spike to have a corncob placed on. This feeder type is very convenient for squirrels, and watching a squirrel pick the seeds off it can be very amusing and entertaining. All feeders have wide and spacious bottom perching shelves; they provide enough comfort and room for animals. There are also various inventive motion squirrel feeder types featuring rotating perches, wheels, tubes and so forth. They can be very helpful in demonstrating squirrels' striking intelligence and readiness to solve all types of puzzles to get to a hidden seed or nut.
Squirrels are extremely territorial so it is very important to place squirrel feeders at a decent distance from bird feeders to avoid conflicts. They are also aggressive toward their own kind in defending their territories; if your area abounds in squirrels, it is better to have more than one feeder in your garden. Squirrels prefer to dwell high up in trees so feeders should occupy elevated positions. Please, remove the peel and husk from your squirrel feeders on a regular basis.
If you would like to have one or more squirrel feeders in your garden, simply purchase any feeder type you like, since squirrels are not picky about it. Squirrel feeders are not generally costly, but their prices vary according to feeder type and configuration. Simple construction wooden feeders usually range between $20 and $30. Feeders equipped with various exercise facilities are more expensive, and they start at around $50. Eventually, whatever squirrel feeder type you choose, be certain that you endow them with a warm, hospitable and tasty reception to your cute little garden visitors must be your primary goal!
