This species inhabits a great variety of habitats from rain forest to deserts of India, Bhutan, Burma, and Bangladesh. It is a pure carnivore that feeds on big game, such as deer, antelope, young elephant, buffalo, and sometimes raids cattle.

This species is the biggest of the cats; males reach up to 3 meters in length and up to 230 kg in weight. These animals are characterized by striped fur; usually they have orange stripes on the black background. White, black, albino and stripeless varieties are rare.
