There are about 450 representatives of this type and their range is shrinking. There are 200 of them in the wild and around 250 species in zoos. These cats have suffered a huge devastation, and are likely to lose their existence in a couple of decades. Unfortunately, with the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the Russian government lost control over poachers, and illegal trade in their body parts and pelts has grown to menacing proportions. Lack of proper legislation allows poachers to actually get away with what they are doing. The Bengal Siberian Tiger is known by pictures and can never be seen on farms.
