Those were quadruped animals with 44 teeth among which there were specialized one for cutting meat. Their bodies as well as the tails were long and they were divided by the evolution into two main groups: fissipeda, which means split feet, and pinnipeda, which means fin feet. Nowadays, there are eight known subspecies of Panthera Tigris: the Amur, Bengal, Indo-Chinese, Javan, Bali, Caspian, Sumatran and Chinese. The Bali, Javan and Caspian subspecies may be gone or scattered beyond restoration. The five remaining subspecies run the risk of losing their existence in the first half of the 21st century. There are about 200 Amur subspecies left in the wild, and about 250 animals are kept in zoos. Their population has sustained damage from extensive deforestation and poaching.
