The animals may have rather great territories; they may be as large as 120 square miles. A male’s home range overlaps several females’ territories, but he never disturbs females. The dominant male copulates with all the females that live inside his territory. Nursing females are very protective around their young and defend them aggressively against males that may kill the cubs. Litters usually contain 3-4 cubs, and they are born blind and helpless. They start eating meat 6-8 weeks after birth, and begin to hunt independently at 1.5-2 years old.
