There are eight subspecies of these cats but nowadays there are only five of them that exist and the other three are already extinct. These three subspecies are Bali, Caspian and Javan. Actually a century ago there were about 100000 representatives of these cats and now there are less than 5000 species left. The Indo-Chinese subspecies is also on the verge of extinction, and there are less than 200 Amur subspecies left in the wild. Bengals are the most numerous of the five, but they also suffer from poaching and deforestation. Today, the Amur subspecies can only be found in the Sikhote-Alin reserve, while a century ago, there were lots of them in Korea and China.

The serious steps should be undertaken to protect these animals from the total extinction and one of them are already made, they are the prohibition of killing them and preventing deforestation process. Almost in every country hunting on these animals is banned except Myanmar where it is legal to kill the animals for the parts of their body. Unfortunately, the population of Amur subspecies continues to decrease, as their woods are being cleared, and many species are killed for their pelts, whiskers and bones.
