One of the main characteristics of this breed is its soft dense long coat with an insulating undercoat. Many colors are accepted in this breed: tan, black, liver, white, apricot, and brindle. There exist two types: Gremlin and Teddy Bear.

The SCA is the only breed association; no other organizations recognize this breed, as it is very young and rare. Breeding is aimed mostly at health, longevity and temperament of these dogs. With proper care they make excellent pets. The shichon kennels will often support the rescues for this breed.
