The ancestors of this breed were developed from the Roman mastiff-type war dogs that traveled with the army, driving and protecting cattle and participating in many campaigns. When crossbred with local dogs, they produced working breeds suited to the local climate. Roman dogs gave rise to many working breeds in Europe. In Germany, the descendants of the Roman dogs were used to bring the herds to the butcher for sale, pull carts and to guard the purses of money. These dogs are famous for many talents: they are protective and loyal, easy to train, dignified and aloof with strangers, but gentle with the family.
