This old breed originated in the German town Rottweil located in the southern Germany. The town was named for the red tile roofs of the villas built by the Romans. The breed was admitted to the AKC Stud Book in 1931. There were several Clubs formed in the beginning of the 19th century and in 1921 they were united as the Allgemeiner Deutscher Rottweiler Klub (ADRK.) In the 80th, the breed was fairly uncommon in the United States. While nowadays the breed is popular all over the world.

Like many large and massive breeds, these dogs suffer from a number of joint problems. Hip or elbow dysplasia is a typical disorder of this breed. Retinal problems, spinal cord paralysis, epilepsy, allergies and other disorders that are difficult to live with often become the reason for surrendering a dog to the rescue. There are almost no perfect dogs in rescues. All of them are surrendered because of health or behavior problems. New owners should choose a dog very carefully.
