This ancient breed was used by the Romans for herding the cattle and guarding the camps across the Alps. In the 19th century, these dogs lived mostly in the town of Rottweil and were called butcher dogs, because they drove the cattle to the market and carried the purses with money around the neck. At the beginning of the 20th century, the breed was on the brink of extinction, because railroads became the primary means of transportation and the dogs lost their job. Today, this breed is very popular only due to fanciers that formed several clubs to protect the unique working abilities of these dogs.
