The main characteristics of the breed are: well-developed muzzle with a scissors bite, broad head and massive, powerful body. The ears are triangular and should be carried forward, and the nose is wide and black. The coat is very short and smooth. The tail is usually docked; the lips are black and the inside of the mouth is dark-colored. The coat comes in black with brown markings on the cheeks and muzzle, paws and legs. The coat can also be red.

Historically, this breed is widely used for herding the cattle, guarding the property, personal protection and other tasks. Nowadays, the breed is used mostly for police work, as a pet and guard. It’s also good at obedience and agility. Purebred dogs differ much within the breed; some bloodlines make friendly family companions; others are good as herders, show or working dogs. Much depends on the pedigree, on the purpose of every particular litter and on the training given to the dog. The American type of the breed is suited for the show ring, while the German type is bred mostly for work.
