This breed of poultry was once very popular among the farmers of the USA, but in the 1980’s this breed was replaced by other hybrids that re more efficient. Nowadays Rhode Island Reds are used mainly for shows and only a few breeders produce the old type roosters.

The standard for show quality birds is very strict. The tone of their feathers should be rich, dark and lustrous red; the comb should be large and brightly red. The ideal weight for roosters is 8.5 pounds; hens are 6.5 pounds. Chicks are fun to watch in the photos, as this bird is very beautiful.
