This small pet is alert, intelligent and inquisitive. His affection makes him a great companion for children and the elderly, especially when raised from a puppy. These small animals were used as ratters, and relying on their expertise in killing rats was a favorite hobby of some owners. They were crossed with Whippets or Italian Greyhounds for their speed and Beagles for their hunting ability. Eventually, these tough little pets evolved into today's known breed.
