The breed was developed in the 1960s in Riverside, California, by Ann Baker, a breeder of Persian cats. Mrs. Pennel, her neighbor, had a white long-coated cat, named Josephine, which frequently produced kittens. Josephine was destined to become the founder of the Ragdoll and the Ragamuffin.

Josephine was wild-tempered usually produced feral kittens, but after she recovered from traumas she received in a car accident, she grew more people-oriented. Strangely, kittens of her subsequent litters were more tamable than those of her previous ones. Ann started working towards developing a sociable and people-oriented cat.
