The cat classifieds are a good way to find a kitten; a rescue is another alternative, however, the quality of the animal isn't guaranteed.
This species was introduced in the 1960s by Ann Baker, a Persian breeder. She started her project with breeding ordinary cats, produced by Josephine, a female, which produced many kittens. Her goal was to develop a people-oriented feline with a mild and loving temper.

It happened so, that some members of Ann’s team disassociated themselves from the project, and formed their own societies. Later they registered at mainstream organizations, and the popularity of the breed increased. Now Ragdolls are still rare, but there are a growing number of Ragdoll fanciers.
