Ragamuffins were endowed with championship status in 2001, and there is still much uncertainty over the breed’s true origin. The project was headed by Ann Baker, who aimed at developing a truly people-oriented cat, and in the 1960s she took first steps in creating a new breed.

The goal of the project was to develop a large cat, which would become perfectly fit for family life. These cats may weigh 15 to 20 pounds, and they have a very strong body built and substantial rabbit-like firm coating. These cats are excellent lap-companions.
