This species is found in Africa, but today very few of them are found in the wild, because of the habitat destruction and excessive hunting. Native hunters kill these creatures for meat and fat that are used in tribal medicine.

The beautiful skin of this species is also valuable. Other predators of these animals are crocodiles, mongooses and other carnivores. The mortality rate among the young is very high.
