This breed is also called Hungarian Water Dog. It is very old and dates back to several thousands years ago. The Magyars used these dogs for herding sheep and droving. The black coat color is preferable, because such dogs are easier to see in the flock.

During the second world war the number of these dogs reduced much, but thanks to dedicated breeders, the breed has recovered. Today, this breed is still used for herding and guarding houses.
