The breed arrived in Europe around the turn of the 17th century, and it was not until the 1800s that a certain standard was drafted. There were two varieties: the Willoughby, and the Morrison. These dogs had different body builds and coat colors.

The Willoughby species had thin and leggy bodies, and they came in so called ‘smutty fawn’ or stone fawn color with occasional dark spots or saddle marks on the back. Morrison dogs featured apricot fawn coats, and they had chubbier bodies. Today, these varieties seem to have merged.
