The breed probably originated in China, and first species arrived in Holland around the turn of the 17th century via the Dutch East India Company. The Dutch called them Mopshonds, and in Spain the breed was called Dogullo, in France – Carlin, in Italy – Caganlino, and in Germany – Mops.
