These horses are characterized by large, irregular color markings, most commonly black and white. Horses of this pattern were favored by the buffalo hunters of the American Great Plains.

This breed has been developed and was recognized in the United States in 1963. It is a popular general-purpose riding horse. These horses do not have consistent conformation since they are bred for color. There are four acknowledged types of conformation however: the Saddle type, Stock type, Hunter type and Racing type.
