Flying squirrels were named so for their ability to smoothly glide in the air. They do not have wings, but there is a membrane between their front and rear limbs. When a squirrel jumps, it spreads the membrane, which can well carry its body weight for significant distances. Flying squirrels are brown on top and white underneath, and the flat tail permits them to steer between tree branches.
