Monitor lizards belong to the family Varanidae. The largest living lizard, the Komodo Dragon, belongs to this family. The name "Monitor" is derived from the lizards' habit to stand on the hind legs monitoring the surroundings. Monitor lizards are very difficult to keep as pets.
