For short distances or long 100-mile endurances, racing horses is one of mankind’s most ancient sports originating about 4500 B.C. among nomadic tribesmen. Horse racing became the sport of kings and nobility for thousands of years and a profession during Queen Anne’s reign. Matched races yielded to spectator betting. Racing courses emerged all over England, offering increasingly larger purses to attract the best competition. Today, races exist primarily as a major setting for legalized gambling.
