The Cleveland Bay is the oldest of the indigenous breed of English horses. They originated in Britain, in the Cleveland area of Northern Yorkshire. This breed is thought to have evolved in the 17th century from crossing native bay colored mares with Oriental stallions. They are a versatile breed that has been used for agricultural work, hunting, and as a packhorse.
