The Chincoteague Pony descended from the wild horses on Assateague Island. This island is a 37-mile long barrier off the coast of Maryland and Virginia. These ponies are split into two separate herds at the state line, each around 150 animals. It is the Virginia herd that is often referred to as the Chincoteague ponies.
