Pigs
Page 1 (Mulefoot - Pot Belly Pig)
|
Perhaps originating from the Eurasian Wild Boar about 9,000 years ago (maybe earlier in China,) pigs were domesticated in Eurasia and spread to Europe and Africa. Most livestock were associated to nomadic peoples; swine was associated to established, farming communities as they are difficult to drive, especially to great distances. Barrow (neutered male,) gilt (young female,) boars (uncut male,) and hogs are other names for pigs. Today, eight pig types are popular in the US for breeding.
