A common belief is that the Nubian subspecies of African wild ass is the donkeys’ ancestor. Unclearly domestication records go back to the fourth millennium BC from a site at Ma’adi, Lower Egypt. The Nubian cattle farmers first tamed donkeys to replace oxen. The donkey is easy to lead and traine to follow a path on its own, thus, increasing the mobility of rural peoples. Whole families, not just men, could then follow their flocks.
