Sand cats are small solitary domestic-looking wildcats about 22-inches long and weighing 6.5 pounds, inhabiting North Africa, Arabia, Turkmenistan, and Pakistan deserts. Adapted suitably to temperature extremes, thick gray-yellow non-distinctly striped fur insulates from night cold. Padded longhair feet shield from hot ground and supports footing across deep sands. Triangular, acute ears detect prey movements above and below ground. Burrowed away from daytime heat, it sleeps. After sundown, it hunts small mammals, insects, and snakes.
