About 40 subspecies of Red fox populate Europe (except Iceland,) Canada, USA, Asia from Japan to Indochina, and Australia, typically inhabiting forests and open lands, but encroaching urban areas, too. These opportunistic territorial canines forage alone for insects, earthworms, fruit, berries, wild birds, small mammals e.g. mice and rabbits, and human scraps. Occasionally, they will form packs. Vixen (females) pair with males for life giving birth to litters from 4-7 pups. Lifespan is about 7 years.
