Maybe the smallest of wild cats, Black-footed Cats are native to South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Southern Angolan semi-deserts. The name is derived from black feet pads surrounded by long black hairs that protect it from the heat. The coat color varies from light sandy to reddish brown with spotted skin patches akin to broken stripes. The broken tail has dark rings and black tip. Coat paleness or darkness and territory identify the two subspecies.
