Stick insects are long, sluggish, herbivorous, nocturnal insects capable of mimicry (imitation.) Their eggs appear like tiny brown seeds; their bodies look like twigs. About 3,000 species of stick insects exist. They have three-part bodies 6-8cm in length, six jointed legs, two pairs of wings, two antennae, and hard exoskeletons with spiracles on each side for breathing. Nymphs are hatchlings that appear like little adults without wings or reproductive organs. Average lifespan is 18 months.
