The oldest of all known deer retaining prehistoric characteristics unlike our own native species of deer, Muntjacs are indigenous to Southeast Asia. There are eight known subspecies. Their raised hindquarters give them a hunched appearance. They carry small antlers. The coat ranges from bright, shiny chestnut red to brown/gray depending upon the season; the undersides are whitish. A small deer standing 43-46cm and weighing 11-16 kg is sometimes mistaken for a fox in poor light.
