The Barbary lion (Altas, Atlas, Nubian) is one of two lion subspecies possessing an identifiable lush dark belly fringe that extended throughout the groin with a golden halo around the regal face. Their skull traits connect them to Asian subspecies. Once found throughout Northern Africa from Morocco to Egypt, the last Barbary lion in the wild was killed in the Moroccan Atlas Mountains in 1922. Hunting, deforestation, and habitat infringements by humans contributed to their extinction.
