Even if the Saint Bernard is not heralded as the largest dog, it's the heaviest. The world record for heaviest dog belongs to a Saint Bernard that weighed over 300 pounds. Generally, they weigh between 100 and 200 pounds with a standard large dog height of between 27 and 30 inches. They hearken back to Switzerland, and their main purpose is to rescue people. Unfortunately, the breed of today looks moderately different from those of centuries past. Ironically, an avalanche killed many of the breeding dogs in one massive event. Therefore, the remaining dogs had to be crossed with other breeds. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is one of its ancestors. People fazed the Bernese Mountain Dog when the Saint Bernards took over search missions. They dominated search & rescue missions thereafter. Famous Disney movies and popular culture has crystallized the Saint Bernard as the quintessential rescue dog. The Saint Bernard has a soft, intelligent expression to its face. Its coat comes in white with tan, red, mahogany, brindle, or black markings. Its weight should be in proportion to its height. If so, people prize taller dogs over shorter ones. The Saint Bernard moves in a sluggish manner. They can sense doom from natural disasters, and they also have a great smell sense. The dog continuously drools after consuming food or water. It lives 8 to 10 years, and it needs a lengthy walk each day. Comb and brush with a firm bristle brush and don’t bathe it too much because the fine oils are removed from the coat. It has a sagging face with drooping ears and a fine-looking, stately, and slightly worn countenance. The Saint Bernard was developed 1,000 years ago, in 980 A.D. More than 2,000 people have had their lives saved in the snowy passes of the Alps. This dog has saved, officially, 2 people a year. The dog owes its name to the Saint Bernard de Menthon. The dog will find the lost person and lick it and give its own body heat to restore the cold or lost person. One dog stays on to help the sick person, and another dog will go back to the facility, a hospice traditionally, for help. This dog is fairly dog aggressive, and it shouldn’t be placed with other adult dogs in the same areas. It will pick fights, hide toys, and nip at the legs, etc. A dog that’s trained and socialized from an early age and comes from an excellent pedigree will exhibit trustworthiness, a protective nature, and a non-violent demeanor. The Saint Bernard can help people under several feet of snow. It has a keen sense of smell and hearing that can detect low-frequency noises like avalanches and storms. Don’t leave Saint Bernards outdoors alone without supervision or a leash for obvious reasons.
