The Portuguese Water Dog originated from working dogs that arrived on the Iberian Peninsula via settlers and invaders. This breed was instrumental to fishermen of the past. Considered part of the crew, the dogs were responsible for guarding the catch and boat when in port, transporting messages between boats, herding and catching fish and recovering anything that fell overboard. Today, this breed is used more as a companion dog.
Also called Cao de Agua.
