The Bernese Mountain Dog, Berner Sennenhund, and Berner are all the same breed. They're just synonyms. The Bernese Mountain Dog has a double coat that's good in all types of weather, and it has a beautiful pattern of glistening black, orange rust, and bright white. This Bernese Mountain Dog is a year-round shedding dog, but it only requires a single brushing every couple of weeks unless it’s shedding its undercoat. Thereupon, daily brushing is preferred. Originally from Switzerland, this Bernese Mountain Dog, farm dog, loves to pull carts. It was a common practice in Switzerland when the dogs were en route to market or out on the farm. This cheerful dog, the Bernese Mountain Dog, interacts well with animals of all kinds, including cats. It's a great family farm and fun dog.

The Bernese Mountain Dog had a very shaky history. It almost disappeared toward the beginning of the 20th century. Roman conquests brought Roman soldiers, and Roman Soldiers brought big bulky Mastiffs. Many Roman Mastiffs stayed in Switzerland. They bred with the native dogs to produce the Bernese Mountain Dog. The Swiss Alps are beautiful, and it explains part of the dog's moniker. The Romans traveled through Switzerland about 2,000 years ago. However, their dogs' posterity became general-purpose farm and search dogs for the next 2,000 years. Some people called it Schweizerische Dürrbach-Klub, after the name of an Inn were it was originally bred. It was named after the city of Bern, and it was a hot spot for fanciers and breeders that flocked there to get the breed going again. Since it almost went extinct due to neglect, the breeders wished to preserve it. Thus, they went to the source. A Midwestern farmer imported the Bernese Mountain Dog to the United States in the mid 1920’s. The first official club in America, the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America, formed in the late 1960's. Many dogs were first officially registered in America in the late 1960's. The times were wild, but the Bernese Mountain Dog helped bring the diverse groups together in peace. Well, they didn't do all that, but the camaraderie of Bernese dog owners helped form some bonds.

Short on endurance, high on energy spurts, and a fool for the outdoors are apt phrases for the Bernese Mountain Dog. Give it exercise outdoors, or it will become unhappy. It lacks the stamina of some notable breeds. They're affectionate, levelheaded, and faithful. They enjoy leaning onto peoples' feet. They're zealous to please, but they respond horribly to irritating training. Praise and rewards are the methods whereby this dog can be trained. They have a tricolor coat of black, rust, and white. Bernese Mountain Dogs 85 to 110 pounds. Their height ranges from 24 to 28 inches. The Saint Bernard replaced them for search and rescue missions. A litter of 8 puppies and a short lifespan bordering on 7 years makes Bernese Mountain Dogs a poor choice for someone that wants a long-term companion.
