The Toy Poodle is just a variation of the Standard Poodle and Miniature Poodle; they're recognized as composing the same breed. Their differentiation is marked with the adult's shoulder height. The Poodle's origin was somewhere in Europe. Considerable disagreement exists between France, Germany, and Denmark over the origin. The French, however, have claimed the right, and most people agree. It was probably descended from a French water dog, possibly the Barbet. Some Barbets are still around today. Contrary to popular use as a dainty dog for fanciful women, the poodle was and is a vicious gun dog that was bred to retrieve waterfowl. In fact, the hair was left on the legs to protect from irritants and cold temperatures in the swamps, marshes, and pools of cold water. This breed comes in the standard colors like black, blue or charcoal, white, red, apricot, silver, and brown. These are athletic, springy creatures with a lot of brains and a hunting drive. The Toy Poodle has a woolly, dense, curly coat. It lives 12 to 18 years, which is extremely long. These dogs are intelligent, and they thrive on companionship. They have rounded skulls, distinct muzzles, and almond-shaped eyes. Poodles need to bathed all the time and clipped every month or so. It weighs 6 to 9 pounds, and it is approximately 10 inches or less at the withers. “Pudel” translates directly to the phrase, “to splash in the water”. This dog did splash in the water frequently when it was a gun dog that retrieved waterfowl. The Toy Poodle is a toy gun dog. Roman sculptures and tombs depict Poodles. The French are well regarded as the originating country of miniature, toy, and standard Poodles. Their talents are wide-ranging because of their intelligence. They include agility, obedience, tracking, herding, and many tricks. This breed has been a circus performer for centuries in many countries. They’re great fun and highly amusing. Teacup poodles are even smaller. The tail is usually docked. Most people don’t keep up the expensive cuts that Poodles are known for in pictures. The Toy Poodle loves the city or the country. It’s prone to ear infections, runny eyes, digestive tract and heart disorders, slipped stifle, and Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia. Some are nervous, high-strung, reticent, shy, and snappish. They tend to be introverted or grumpy around rough children or disturbing visitors. Toy Poodles tend to bark a lot unless they’re trained. This breed is an instinctual hunter because of its long history outdoors hunting, pointing, and retrieving waterfowl. Some people want sitting lap dogs, but this dog does not bond to one family member exclusively. Plus, it’s got plenty of energy. “Pudel” means puddle. People can understand just how Toy Poodles got their names.
