The Phalene is a variety of the Papillon breed that originated from the Continental Toy Spaniel. The Phalenes have drop ears instead of the perky ears of the Papillon. The Phalene's name comes from the moth that folds its wings when at rest. Both Phalenes and Papillons are born in the same litter.
