The Standard Poodle also goes by Caniche, Barbone, and Chien Canne. Poodles are very often white, but they also come in black, dark black and blue, red, apricot, brown, and silver. Their coat can be parti-colored or multi-colored. The Poodle has been a European sight for over 400 years. The French adapted the Poodle's characteristics to morph it into a circus act. Its national merit earned it the title of French Poodle. Its original use, outside of the circus, was to retrieve the birds shot down by hunters. Its hair was cut just right so that it could swim, and hair was left around the joints so that sharp rocks, grasses, and cool water wouldn't hurt the pet. One of its terms, the Caniche, means duck dog. The poor ducks never knew that a Poodle would find them dead in the water. Most people aren’t aware that Poodles have a much worse bite than other dogs like Rottweilers. The latter has unnecessary stigma, while the former is well regarded because of its perceived daintiness and groomed appearance. It has a stringy, frizzy coat. It has a springy, bouncy, flawless trot that makes it look dignified and arrogant. It has a robust joy of life in its demeanor that’s reflected in its gait. Its primary roles of the past are gun dog, circus performer, and pet dog for royalty and nobility in French, German, and European houses.
The Standard Poodle has a long muzzle, sphere-shaped skull, scissors bite, swooping ears, muddy oval eyes, and small oval feet. Males weigh 45 to 70 pounds, females weigh 45 to 60 pounds, and they come in at about 15 inches high at the withers. It’s distinct from the two competing breeds, Miniature and Toy, by should height. All other traits are similar. The Standard Poodle is congruent to the other two. The Standard Poodle is the oldest breed size; it came out of the Middle Ages in Germany. Its tail is often docked. Most Poodles live well into their teens with good diets and healthy lifestyles. According to the Poodle health registry, the following diseases are common, and they include Addison’s Disease, GDV, Hypo/Hyper Thyroid, Epilepsy, Hip Dysplasia, and Cancer. It excels in obedience, agility, security, and as a gun dog.
The Standard Poodle is proud, fashionable, and exquisite. It’s a handsome, stylish breed. It has a Continental, English, Puppy, or no clip. Today’s clips are mirrored in paintings of long ago that show that the Poodle was groomed for less water resistance in pools and swamps. It was, after all, an excellent water retriever. Pudelin is a word that directly means, “splashing in water”, and Poodles are excellent at retrieving things in the water.
