The Shiba Inu is the smallest of six breeds originally from Japan. It’s also the oldest one in line. It’s called the Little Brushwood Dog, Japanese Shiba Inu, Japanese Small Size Dog, Shiba, and Shiba Dog. Inu is a generic Japanese word that means dog. Some might mistake it for a similar-looking Akita breed. It is familiar with hunting small game and small birds in mountainous terrain, valleys, glens, and forests. It is probably related to the Chow Chow, and it was imported into Japan from China. It's an ancient breed that's over 2,000 years old that's part of the Spitz family. The Shiba Inu was bred to hunt with sight and scent in close-knit, thickset Japanese forest areas. It’s the most popular companion dog in Japan today. It was originally bred to hunt large game, then small game, and, finally, to dwell in homes as companions. It derived its name in the 1920s, and it made its entry into the United States in 1954 for breeding and pet ownership. A member of the army brought the dog back on a ship to America. The first official litter was in the late 70’s. They have a life expectancy bordering on 12 to 15 years. The Shiba Inu does well in cold weather and on long treks. This dog is lively and alert, and it needs lots of family company to stay fulfilled and happy. It has peak endurance that few dogs can counter. Brush it twice weekly with a firm bristle brush to remove dead hair. Its coat is blown twice yearly. The Shiba Inu coat comes in red, black, and tan combinations with cream or white markings also. It has an elongated face, pendant erect ears, and small eyes. Dogs are 14 to 16 inches high at the withers, and females are 13 to 15 inches. Dogs have a standard weight of 18 to 25 pounds. Bitches are 15 to 20 pounds. They bark infrequently. They’re excellent watch dogs if the situation is unsettling. Keep parrots, birds, pet rodents, and any other creatures like Guinea Pigs or Hamsters far away from this breed. This breed has an inborn hunting instinct that can’t just be turned off and on again. The Shiba Inu is always under the control of its master. It has boldness, independence, and courage. It can be dog aggressive and unfriendly to humans. It, however, bonds fiercely and lovingly to its handler. The Shiba Inu likes canines, felines, children, and others if it’s socialized in its early years. Shiba can mean “small” or “red shrub”. The dog is somewhat small, and it was used to hunt amongst red shrubs. Food allergies, Hip Dysplasia, Cataracts, luxating patella, and PRA are a few genetic problems with Shiba Inus.
