The Lhasa Apso is from Tibet where Monk priests to guard sacred monasteries against burglars and conniving people used it. It barks its head off until the master is awakened to pursue the intruder's cabal of villains. The dog is always suspicious of strangers because it’s a watchdog. It doesn't get along well with children. It needs 30 minutes of brisk exercise per day, and it requires a dominant, consistent, and fair trainer. Lhasa is a holy city in Tibet. The master's soul possibly entered the Lhasa Apso's body after death. That was a good reason to be kind to the breed. It wasn't until the early 20th century, around the 1930's, that the dog became seen in America and Europe. The Tibetan king, the Dalai Lama, gave the dog as gifts to diplomats, kings, noblemen, and merchants that visited Tibet. Since the dog was developed and popularized by the Dalai Lama, it's important to note that it too approaches life with serenity and deliberate directness. Many people don't know that Lhasa Apsos were actually life saving because thieves weren't confronting high-tech alarms in former centuries of long ago. The Lhasa Apso is 10 to 11 inches high at the withers. Females weigh 12 to 14 pounds. Males weigh 14 to 18 pounds. Once you see a Lhasa Apso, you'll never forget it. Its heavy, stringy, downward-sloping coat drapes all the way to the floor. The coat even covers its face and eyes. People often mistake it for a miniature version of the Old English Sheepdog. The hair is not silky, as some pictures suggest. It's actually rough, dense, and weighty. It flows and cascades, and the coat comes in many colors. Interestingly, the colors sometimes change over time. The coat comes yellow, cream, honey, gold, coal, slate, brown, white, and black. Besides the heavy coat, it has a mustache, beard, and feathered tail. The Lhasa Apso is a superb watchdog. It's exceptionally good at guarding against intruders, but it's a terrible fighter. Its extremely loud bark threatens intruders, and they suspect that it's a much larger dog. They won't withstand rough play or annoyance, and they're wary of strangers, children, and visitors. They make a good dog for a single man or woman that wants a devoted friend that will help guard the house. The downside to that is that they don't like being alone. Chow chows are solitary watchdogs, in comparison. The Lhasa Apso can live an astonishing 18 years, but they usually live 12 to 15 years. These dogs need daily brushing to get out mats. A daily walk is also required. The owner needs to establish his headship and dominance during training to ensure success. Lhasa Apsos do well in apartments, and they're perfect dogs for inner city, lonely living.
