The Gordon Setter is part of the same family that includes the English Setter and Irish Setter. Its utility rests in its formidable talents hunting fowl and wild birds. Like a lot of breeds, it had its origins in Scotland. It first came about in the 17th century, but it was made popular by Duke Alexander IV in the 18th century. It is an apt hunting dog for any kind of game bird that tries to remain inconspicuous in the face of a predator. Some birds dart away at danger signals, but others attempt to take cover. These are the dog's main targets. The breed can point out prey and then retrieve it once its been shot. The dog can hunt on varied terrain in volatile weather, and it's a proficient, dependable, reliable one-man dog. Partridge, Grouse, Ptarmigan, Snipe, Guinea Fowl, Hens, Pheasants, and Francolins are all fascinating birds that have multi-colored feather patterns and exuberant gaits. These are just a handful of the birds that the Gordon Setter will help its master hunt down. The Gordon Setter has a distinctive coat that's black and tan. It's also been called jet-black and rust or coal and fiery orange. The black dominates, but there is mahogany, orange, or burnt orange markings in various parts like the paws, legs, muzzle, eyes, chest, and throats. The males are 24 to 27 inches high, and the females are 23 to 26 inches high. The males weigh 50 to 80 pounds. The females come in at 45 to 70 pounds. It's common for the females to be a few inches shorter and several pounds lighter for all breeds. The coat is silky, wavy or flat, and feathery in some parts. It lives 10 to 12 years, and it's a very healthy. It does suffer from a few problems, notably hip dysplasia. Other potential illnesses include PRA, epilepsy, and gastric torsion. For the last reason, it's necessary to feed it only 2 to 3 miniature meals per day. Keep the food flowing, but only in small amounts at wide increments and intervals of time in between meals. The Gordon Setter is an ideal breed, almost virtuous. You see, it's courageous, brave, confident, loving, and loyal. It is not aggressive. On the contrary, it's incredibly animated, alert, and peaceful. Some have described it as outgoing and gay. The breed takes several years to mature, and it's a proficient talker. It doesn't actually speak understandable languages, but it does speak back and forth between itself and the master. Many cats also exhibit a similar trait when they call out for food or to go outdoors for a restroom break. The Gordon Setter needs over an hour of exercise each day, and it has to have constant supervision when it's outdoors. A leash, dog fence, or nanny can do this task. If it's allowed to roam freely, a moving vehicle could run into it. Its hunting abilities make it prone to scent chasing. It's also uncomfortable without a lot of exercise. Blame the fanciers for creating such an endurable hunting dog. Gordon Setters need training from an early age.
