The Borzoi is also known as the Russian Wolfhound, Russkaya Psovaya Borzaya, and Psowaya Barsaya. The Borzoi looks like a Greyhound with long hair, and it's a stately, aristocratic, and dignified dog with an unusual and memorable shape to its body. The hallmark curve or arch to the back produces an equally distinct shape to the underside of the Borzoi. The Borzoi coat can be white, gold, tan, or gray, but it can come in virtually any color or combination thereof. The coat is soft, silky, and either curly or wavy. It's a type of ancient sight hound that's well-suited to adults and proper household settings.

The origin of the Borzoi is not clouded with half-truths or guesses by archaeologists and scholars. They concur that it was brought to Russia from the Middle East in the middle 1600's, and it was thereupon crossed with sheepdogs. The nobility took a fondness to it, and they went on regular wolf hunts with the Borzoi. One of its nicknames, after all, is Wolfhound, and that name goes back more than 400 years. The Borzoi had a consistent fan base for several hundred years, and it was eventually imported to the English royal court, and it became a favorite for Queen Victoria. Royalty then used these dogs as gifts. The dog derives its name from the Russian word for swift. "Borzii" is very similar to Borzoi.

The Borzoi is used as a companion dog, sight hound, hunter, and courser. Many people are familiar with Greyhounds racing around the track on television. This sport, lure coursing, is also a pastime of Borzois. The Borzoi can have 1 to 11 puppies per litter, and it lives a medium lifespan of 10 to 12 years. Watch that the dog doesn't get exercise after a meal, and be sure to observe cases of bloat. In Bloodhounds, bloat is deadly. Feed a few light meals per day, and keep it away from drugs because it's very sensitive, more so than other breeds. Check with a veterinarian that specializes in Borzois to make sure the medications, and their dosages, are safe enough to not solicit a bad reaction.

Borzaya means quick dog in Russian. It's sometimes used to refer to sight hounds, including the Borzoi. Even though some traces of the wolf-chasing abilities remain, the remnants are not notable in the Borzoi. For instance, even puppies will speed after other dogs and grab them at the neck to pin them down. These great wolf-catching talents do not carry over well in security aspects. They aren't useful as watchdogs or guard dogs, and their fighting abilities are negligible. Borzois often succumb to such diseases as gastric torsion, cardiac problems, progressive retinal atrophy, Osteochondritis dissecans, bloat, and hip dysplasia. Borzois are sometimes called Borzoi in the plural.
