The West Highland White Terrier, or Westie for short, is a descendant of the Scottish Terrier and Cairn Terrier. This small dog is well known for its white coat and spirit. They brim with confidence despite a small stature. Its been described as cocky, self-assured, and playful. It likes to chase things, dig, and bark. A daily walk outdoors is a requirement of the breed, and a bound yard will help it exercise too. In Scotland, the country of origin, it was bred to attack foxes, badgers, otters, rats, mice, and other unseemly rodent types. They sleep more than half of the 24-hour cycle to get the needed recuperation that's a requisite of their physiology. Their faces are featured on certain brands of Scotch whiskey, and that has helped solidify their image to millions of people. The West Highland White Terrier males are 10 to 12 inches high at the withers, and the females are 9 to 11 inches high. The males are 15 to 22 pounds, and the females are 13 to 16 pounds. Unfortunately, there are just a couple or more puppies in a litter. Three is the average number. They live 12 to 14 years. Most toy dogs have a maximum of 15 years. Pert, perky ears and solid, jet-black eyes are memorable on this dog's cute face. The tail resembles a 6-inch carrot that's never docked. Despite their small stature, they have a broad, powerful chest and dense musculature too. Their head is awfully big for their body size. Their double coats require regular maintenance. Their feet are padded, webbed, and oddly shaped. The dog has a problem with overly dry skin, and bathing is not wise unless it's irregular and supplemented with hydrating oils. The double-coat sheds very little hair. Some Terrier breeds shed just minute amounts of hair. The West Highland White Terrier has a distinctive white coat that aids hunters; they don't wish to mistake it for a game animal and shoot it on accident. They do well indoors, and they're also very independent. You'll probably find it napping because it takes frequent naps. The naps and nighttime sleep, which usually matches its owner, add up to 12 to 13 nice hours per day. They live about 15 years long. They need adequate playtime, but playtime is not a substitute for a daily walk. Some dogs instinctively require a daily walk to stay fit and emotionally levelheaded. Their eyes are piercing balls of darkness that will penetrate the viewer. They're noted for their poetic eyes. Most are highly companionable and act as watchdogs too. The West Highland White Terrier will tolerate other pets, even cats, if they're around from an early age. Furthermore, train West Highland White Terriers to not bark as much during the puppy years.
